1> Ecological Monitoring Scientist
OBJECTIVES: To collect monitoring data according to EMAN protocols (Ecological Monitoring and Assessment Network) for two salamander populations on rare property as well as collect annual data in our permanent forest health and soil humus decay rate monitoring plots.
Eligiblity: This is a paid position under Environment Canada’s Science Horizons Youth Internship Program. Requirements include:
1. An undergraduate degree in one of the environmental or biological disciplines (an additional M.Sc. degree would be an asset)
2. Currently not pursuing fulltime studies, must be unemployed or under –employed
3. Under 30 years of age
4. Legally entitled to work in Canada
Skills and Requirements:
1. Experienced conducting independent scientific research and monitoring studies.
2. A proven ability to implement projects from start to finish.
3. Previous fieldwork experience in biology, physical geography, environmental studies or a related discipline.
4. Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
5. Experienced using keys for species identification. A comprehensive knowledge of the tree species of Southern Ontario would be an asset.
6. Prior knowledge of salamander biology and diversity in Southern Ontario would be an asset.
7. A solid statistical background would be an asset.
Responsibilities:
1. Reviewing protocols and consulting with monitoring specialists.
2. Fieldwork; including the relocation of previous monitoring sites, collection of data on the number and diversity of salamander populations, recording soil and meteorological data, and assessing forest health using set protocols.
3. Analysing data and preparation of reports for both monitoring projects.
Salary: $525 per week based on a 35 hour week. The contract is for 30 weeks.
